Trouble Ahead
I could sense there was trouble ahead
She had ordered pan fried fillet of North Sea red bream with Roscoff onion, sprouting broccoli and English asparagus
But substituting the bream for roast fillet of hake
And the asparagus for charred sweetcorn
Pointing with her knife, she was asking what’s this
Looking up from his 10-oz rib eye steak, wild mushroom sauce £2 extra
Her husband replied, I think it’s a vegetable
Undeterred she began talking about shelves
We could put one in lower
We don’t need it higher
We could just put it in lower
That would give us six
Her husband nodded
Mumbled something about five being enough
But I could tell
He’d long since given up caring
About shelves
Cupboards even
Possibly life
